In April 2024, Mickey underwent major surgery here at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, including a median sternotomy - a complex procedure in which the breastbone is carefully divided to allow access to the organs in the chest. This approach was necessary to safely remove a cyst on his thymus gland, deep within the thoracic cavity. The decision to proceed with surgery was carefully planned by our soft tissue surgery team, who coordinated closely with anaesthesia and nursing colleagues to ensure Mickey would be as safe as possible during this intricate operation.
Behind every successful surgery at the QVSH, is a whole team of dedicated veterinary professionals. From the moment Mickey arrived, our veterinary nurses provided meticulous monitoring, administering medications and supportive care around the clock to keep him comfortable and stable. Our anaesthesia team ensured Mickey remained pain-free and stable during the operation, while our experienced nursing team oversaw his immediate post-operative recovery, ready to respond to any complications. Our diagnostic and lab teams also played essential roles, providing imaging and test results that guided his treatment every step of the way.
Mickey’s owner shared that they were extremely nervous, but they were supported fantastically from start to finish, and always kept fully informed. We know that clear communication is incredibly important when a beloved pet is undergoing major surgery, and our team ensured regular updates and reassurance throughout his hospital stay. Just a few months later, Mickey’s progress has been nothing short of remarkable. By August, he was back competing in agility trials, showing the determination and enthusiasm that defines him so well. Later in the year, he qualified out of 180 dogs for Olympia (LIHS) at ExCeL London in December, before going on to qualify for Crufts in March.
We are incredibly proud of Mickey and his journey, and sincerely thank his owner for trusting us with his care. Stories like Mickey’s highlight not only the resilience of our patients, but also the skill, dedication, and teamwork of our multidisciplinary teams - from surgery and nursing, to anaesthesia, diagnostics, rehabilitation, and ongoing support.
Well done, Mickey. You’ve inspired us all.
