Veterinary Physiotherapy
We are proud that our Veterinary Physiotherapy service is led by Matthew Scott BSc (Hons) CCRP MNAVP AHPR. Matthew graduated from Harper Adams University in 2017 as part of the first cohort undergoing undergraduate training for veterinary physiotherapy. After graduation he worked as the in house veterinary physiotherapist at the Animal Health Trust’s (AHT) small animal referral centre, assisting multiple services throughout the hospital including neurology, orthopaedics, and hydrotherapy. Following the closure of the AHT, he co-founded an independent veterinary rehabilitation centre in Suffolk and has been at the QVSH since 2023 developing the physiotherapy service.
Matthew is Chair of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists (NAVP) and sits on the regulatory committee for the Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance (VOA). Matthew is a previous board member and remains registered with the Animal Health Professions’ Register (AHPR). He is also a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) and member of the International Association of Veterinary Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy (IAVRPT). Matthew regularly provides online and practical CPD to other veterinary professionals and helps with the practical teaching of vet physio students. His clinical interests include neurological rehabilitation, OA management, respiratory physiotherapy techniques, and the use of orthotics.
Outside of work, Matthew enjoys playing the guitar, rugby, and generally keeping fit.
Our hospital is committed to a holistic approach to pet care, where physiotherapy plays a key role. Working closely with our neurology, orthopaedics, and nursing teams, we offer dedicated physiotherapy services for small animals, ensuring the highest standard of care. Our team collaborates with all veterinary departments throughout the hospital to enhance your pet's recovery after surgery or injury, or other external factors.
Direct external referrals from referring vets are accepted to the outpatient clinic, and appointments are currently available Tuesdays to Fridays.
A physiotherapy session at the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH) includes a thorough physical examination involving postural, gait, and functional assessment, as well as palpation, joint range of motion, and neurological examination. All assessments are followed by treatment which includes manual therapy such as massage, joint mobilisation, and stretching, electrotherapies such as laser therapy, TENS, or PEMF, and therapeutic exercise to develop long lasting change and aid your pet’s recovery. Every patient is provided with a specific home exercise programme that is emailed to them for convenience.
We also offer additional services including orthotics fitting and shockwave therapy, representing pioneering treatments not found anywhere else in the region. These innovations guarantee the best care, promoting improved mobility and overall recovery for your pet. Full details about our shockwave treatment can be found here.
