Professor Nick Bexfield is Hospital Managing Director and Clinical Director of Small Animal Services at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. He provides overall strategic, operational and clinical leadership across the small animal, equine and farm animal hospitals, with responsibility for clinical standards, service performance, workforce development and long-term planning.
A central focus of his leadership is the transformation and modernisation of hospital services. He works closely with clinical and professional services teams to strengthen clinical delivery, improve operational efficiency, invest in infrastructure and technology, and ensure a financially sustainable model that supports both referral excellence and veterinary education.
Nick also leads the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service, maintaining an active specialist caseload while supporting the development of multidisciplinary care pathways. He directs the Senior (Residency) Clinical Training Programmes and plays a key role in shaping clinical education within the Department.
He graduated from the Royal Veterinary College and after four years in primary care practice he completed a residency in Small Animal Medicine at Cambridge. In 2006 he gained both the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Medicine and the European Diploma in Veterinary Internal Medicine (Companion Animals), and is recognised as both an RCVS and European Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine. He subsequently completed a Wellcome Trust funded PhD in viral discovery and was Clinical Associate Professor in Small Animal Medicine and Oncology at the University of Nottingham before returning to Cambridge in a senior leadership role.
Nick has over two decades of experience in clinical academia. Until recently he served as Chair of the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Examinations Committee and Chair of the BSAVA Publication Committee. He is also a Fellow and Director of Studies at Robinson College.
