Professor Nick Bexfield is Clinical Director of Small Animal Services and part of the Hospital senior leadership team. He has managerial responsibilities for the small animal services and also oversees the Junior (Internship) and Senior (Residency) Clinical Training programmes within the Department. He also heads the internal medicine team which consists of five senior clinicians, four residents and one service nurse.
Nick graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, and following four years in primary care practice, completed a residency in small animal medicine at the University of Cambridge. He gained both the RCVS and European Diplomas in Small Animal Medicine in 2006, and became a European and RCVS Specialist. After his residency he remained at Cambridge as a medicine and then oncology clinician before undertaking a Wellcome Trust funded PhD in viral discovery. He moved to the University of Nottingham in 2013 where he was Clinical Associate Professor in Small Animal Medicine and Oncology for four years. He returned to the University of Cambridge in 2018.
Nick has a strong interest in veterinary education, including assessment methods and novel and innovative ways of delivery. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from the Queen’s Medical School, University of Nottingham, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Nick is co-chair of the ECVIM internal medicine examinations committee, and was a previous Chair of the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Medicine examination committee. He was a member of the BSAVA Congress Scientific Committee for several years and Chair between 2014 and 2017, and is currently Chair of the BSAVA Publications Committee.
