Two foals, Pancake and Poppet were discovered abandoned in a field by the RSPCA, and brought to our Equine Hospital, where they were given intensive, round the clock care.
Pancake (pictured, top right), was close to death. Board certified equine internal medicine clinician Vikki Scott said: “She was emaciated, extremely weak and was unable to stand or support her own weight. She was dehydrated and anaemic with a very low blood protein due to heavy intestinal parasitism."
The two fillies are now recovering in our stables and with careful management, they've successfully avoided refeeding syndrome and deworming complications. These problems are often the reason why many of these cases don't survive despite rescuing. Pancake is now able to get up on her own and although she is still receiving treatment, the prognosis is currently very good. Poppet has also grown from strength to strength and is showing her fun, cheeky personality in full.
